Abstract: How can a DIY process provide thought about ecological and environmental issues? This issue arose after the conclusion of the Bioimages project, in which we developed prototypes of pinhole cameras and laboratory utensils using DIY processes and digital fabrication technologies under an environmental concern. Through active research for an exploratory ecology, we built objects to provide alternative, more ecological, and sustainable methods of developing photographic film. In this context, we developed the ecobject concept to frame the actions carried out and contextualize those objects' design and construction processes.
Subsequently, we tried to develop educational kits that demonstrated the processes of design, construction, and use of ecobjects. However, we encountered several problems: the ecobjects and their respective instructions were dominated by functional issues at the expense of form. This functionalism corresponds to an instructive character and a technical view of the world, thus losing the possibility of problematizing environmental issues and finding new forms and ways of life. To combat these problems and engage in the fight against climate change, we need to promote critical historical research and find Do-It-Together (DIT) approaches that not only instruct but also foster problematization and accountability. In this sense, we propose a mockup for an archival and cartographic DIT platform of artistic and educational practices for environmental sustainability.
